Upwork is an English-language platform where clients can assign short-term or long-term jobs and projects to freelancers worldwide. Upwork has twelve million registered freelancers and five million registered clients.Every year, three million jobs are advertised on the platform. This makes it one of the largest freelancer marketplaces in the world.
History
Upwork was formed 18 months after the announcement of the merger of Elance and oDesk, which occurred in December 2013 as Elance-oDesk. As of March 2017, 12 million users were registered in 180 countries, generating a combined turnover of one billion US dollars.Since its inception in 1999, the company has raised $168 million in 10 private equity funding rounds.
In October 2018, Upwork CEO Stephane Kasriel stated in an interview with CNBC that Upwork had taken steps to help US freelancers protect themselves from wage dumping by foreign colleagues.
